Your Student Isn't Lazy: Their Brain Adapted
Let’s run a thought experiment. Take one minute — just one — of any teenager’s life on TikTok*: several different videos, a scene change every few seconds, music, on-screen text, one new topic after another. Now take one minute of a traditional lecture: a single dominant stimulus, the teacher’s voice, maybe a static slide.
And then we wonder why “they don’t pay attention”?
That was the question that opened the DEXIA program, and this is the summary of Module 1, solutions included in full. The core idea: it's not laziness, it's adaptation
We’ll say it plainly, because it changes how you stand in front of a classroom: what we call “mental laziness” is, to a large extent, a biological response of the brain to a digital environment engineered to capture it.
The scientific evidence we studied in this module points in one direction: stimulus overload fragments attention (call it “digital noise”), a steady diet of fast-format content trains the brain to scan instead of read (the brain in “scan mode”), and all of it loads working memory in ways traditional schooling never anticipated.
This is not an excuse to lower the bar. It’s a diagnosis for teaching better. The kid walking into your class isn’t short on willpower — they’re over-trained in something else. And a brain that adapted in one direction can be helped to retrain in another. That’s where you come in.
So what do we teach? The human part first
If the brain changed, the next question is unavoidable: what’s worth teaching today? In this module we worked through the international frameworks — UNESCO’s pillars of learning and the 21st-century skills agendas — and grounded them in our Latin American reality, with one priority running through the whole DEXIA method: first, the human capacities no machine will supply.
Critical thinking, hand in hand with creativity and curiosity. Empathy — which begins with something as simple as a proper greeting. Socioemotional skills: self-care, managing emotions, healthy relationships. Careful information literacy, on an internet where falsehood grows faster than truth. And managing one’s time and resources, which frankly all of us could use, young and old.
Notice something? None of those capacities develops by watching fifteen-second videos. All of them develop in a classroom, with a teacher who knows what they’re doing. That’s why we insist: the age of artificial intelligence demands more human teachers, not fewer.
The practical solution: the infographic that explains the shift
In class we didn’t stay in theory-land. The program’s very first hands-on exercise was turning the scientific evidence into a resource any teacher can use in the staff room, at a parents’ meeting, or with students themselves: a hand-drawn, sketchbook-style infographic titled “Beyond Mere Mental Laziness.”
Since essential resources around here get published in full, here is the exact prompt we used. Copy it, paste it into your AI tool along with the research papers you want it to analyze, and adapt it to your context:
Act as an expert in neuroeducation and a designer of pedagogical infographics. Your goal is to design an infographic titled “Beyond Mere Mental Laziness,” based exclusively on the scientific papers I have provided.
VISUAL CONTEXT: The infographic should be described so it can be illustrated in a “sketchbook” style (pencil drawings in a notebook, handmade look). It must be visually appealing to children, yet deep enough for teachers to understand the cognitive shift in their students.
REQUIRED STRUCTURE:
- The central character: describe a child surrounded by stimuli (phones, notifications, bursts of short-form video). Show a “zoom” or detail of their brain.
- Neuroscientific analysis (based on the papers): Explain what is happening in that brain. Avoid vague terms; use the documents’ evidence on cognitive load, selective attention, and the impact of fast-format information.
- Infographic sections:
- “Digital Noise”: How information overload fragments attention.
- “The Brain in ‘Scan Mode'”: Why they no longer read but scan, and what that means for working memory.
- “Laziness or Adaptation?”: A section explaining to teachers that this is not lack of will, but a biological response to the digital environment.
- Practical tips: 3 concrete actions teachers can take in the classroom to “retrain” that attention, drawn from the studies’ conclusions.
Tone: Empathetic, scientific yet accessible, and highly visual.
Output format: Organize the answer as a “Design Script,” detailing which text goes where and which pencil-sketch drawing should accompany it.
Three details make this prompt work — and they double as a template for any resource you build:
- A clear role: “act as an expert in neuroeducation and infographic designer.” The AI answers according to the hat you put on it.
- A closed source: “based exclusively on the papers I have provided.” Without that line, the AI makes things up. With it, it works on real evidence that you control.
- A requested structure, not an improvised one: you define the sections; the AI fills them in. The designer of the experience is still you.
What we learned doing it
House honesty: the first round of this exercise taught us that the AI tool matters far less than the source. When teachers uploaded real scientific articles, serious infographics came out; when someone ran the prompt without sources, they got a pretty poster full of clichés. That lesson became a rule for the entire program: evidence first, tool second. One more thing: writing in a paper notebook — yes, the kind that needs no Wi-Fi and no battery — remained the most reliable technology of the whole module. The analog part is non-negotiable.
